Do you feel that you float day to day and don’t remember what you have done? Do you stress about the what-if’s in the future or dwell on past experiences? Can’t put your phone down when your children want your attention? In our busy lives full of stressful jobs, emails, voicemails, text message, kids, husbands and wives, and family, we can find ourselves easily distracted and don’t feel we are able to focus on the things you truly value. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) can help us do just that – pay attention in the present moment without judgment.

So what is MBSR? First, let’s start off with what is NOT MBSR. It is not a religion, dogma or cult. It is not “relaxation” spelled differently. Through the use of a variety of methods such as mindful movement like Qigong, meditation, or just plain old self-care time, MBSR helps you be more in touch with yourself through self-observation, self-inquiry, and mindful action. Living more consciously in the present moment allows you to become more in-tune with your body and mind’s reaction at that moment in time. Eventually, this allows you to choose a different, and hopefully better, response. So, instead of yelling at the guy who just cut you off, you can learn to not let it bother you.

MBSR is also not just about meditation. It’s about being “mindful” in your everyday life. Yes, mindfulness has a lot to do with your thoughts and emotions, but it is also about being mindful of your body. Do you get enough sleep? Do you eat breakfast? Do you work out? Do you allow time for activities you truly enjoy? Do you take breaks throughout your day? Without all of the key ingredients, you are setting yourself up for failure.

So what do I do in an MBSR class? Sit and meditate the entire time? Not at all actually. Whether it’s a weekly class or a workshop, classes usually involve a mixture of talking in groups and with partners, mindful movement called Qigong, and then meditation. Be prepared for lots of self-reflection and ah-ha moments. MBSR isn’t something that you will master in one class, so be prepared for homework (kind of the whole point….).

If you desire to be more present in life, be ready and willing to make some changes in your life – small, incremental changes. Your first step is to have compassion for yourself and appreciate your commitment to focus on mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health in a new way.

Skip the Soda - one can of soda, on average, is about 150 calories. That’s 1,050 calories per week or about 55,000 calories per year! On average, to add or lose 1 pound takes 3,500 calories. At that rate, you could drop a full 16 pounds in one year by simply losing 1 can of soda each day! In it’s place, try any number of things like flavored sparkling water, plain water, or tea.

Ditch the Mayo for Mustard – one tablespoon of mayo is 90 calories. Assuming, on the low side, you consume 4 tablespoons a week, that’s 360 calories or approximately 19,000 calories annually. Again, that’s about 5 pounds a year you could drop by simply dropping the mayo. Instead, try either yellow or spicy brown mustard. It will add just as much, if not more flavor.

Skim on the Whole Milk in your Latte - by simply swapping out the whole milk for skim milk in your daily latte, you’ll save about 100 calories! Let’s assume you have 4 of these a week, that’s 400 calories or just about 21,000 calories a year! In terms of poundage, that’s a full 6 pounds you could drop by simply skimming on the whole milk.

There are any number of other simple things you can swap out to save on the calories. In the end, dropping weight, or simply maintaining a healthy weight, is all about making smart choices. But making smart choices doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice all the taste and make life unbearable! Start with small changes and you’ll start to see those small changes add up to big savings!

Have some other simple swaps? Share them with us so we can try em out!
